On 1 November 2025 the GDC released a revised version of its Scope of Practice guidance, after a broad review and consultation process. The update does not change the legal scope of any of the seven registered dental professional titles (dentists, hygienists, therapists, nurses, clinical dental technicians, dental technicians and orthodontic therapists).
What has changed: guidance style, flexibility, clarity
Instead of a long, task-by-task list, the new guidance uses broader role descriptions. It emphasises that dental professionals must use their professional judgment — and only carry out tasks they are trained, competent, and properly indemnified for. The idea is to reflect the modern, dynamic nature of dentistry: as techniques, technology, and team roles evolve, this approach allows flexibility for professionals to adapt — while maintaining safety and clarity. For example, roles for dental hygienists and dental therapists have been revisited: the guidance clarifies what they can do — provided competence, training, and indemnity requirements are met
Why this matters for dentists and other dental professionals
Encourages use of clinical judgment rather than rigid “task checklists,” helping professionals choose what’s best for patients on a case-by-case basis. Provides clearer boundaries between different registered titles — reducing confusion about who in the dental team should do what. Emphasises the importance of proper training, competence, and indemnity/insurance before delivering any procedure — reinforcing patient safety and professional accountability. Allows for future expansion of skills or services (with further training) by properly qualified team members — offering flexibility as dentistry evolves.
The 2025 update doesn’t expand or shrink what dental professionals can do — instead, it reshapes how we think about who does what, and emphasizes professional judgment, training, competence, and patient-focused care. It’s a move toward clarity, flexibility, and safer, more adaptable dental practice for the future.
